Lapiplasty® Procedure at WVU Medicine: An innovative approach to bunion surgery

June 15, 2018 – WVU Medicine orthopaedic surgeon, Robert Santrock MD, explains an innovative method of treating bunions called Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion CorrectionTM.

According to Dr. Santrock, “Bunions are not a cosmetic problem. They are a mechanical deformity which have, traditionally, not been treated in a very sophisticated way. Traditionally, bunions have been treated in a non-sophisticated way … we’ve been basically ‘knocking the bump off’ or we’ve taken the bone and cut it in half and shifted it over to make it look like the bump is gone, but it’s not really corrected the problem at all.”

The Lapiplasty® 3D Bunion CorrectionTM procedure by Treace Medical allows Dr. Santrock to realign the bone in the middle of the foot, placing it back into a normal anatomic position, and fixing the unstable joint that allowed the bunion to occur in the first place.
